Evaluation of the Result of Chest X-ray Mass Survey on the Outpatients of a General Hospital

Abstract
The author has made an analysis of data obtained through observation of the miniature chest X-ray films taken for 10,386 out-patients. regardless of their clinical complaints, who visited Seoul University Hospital during the period from January 1 to 30, 1962, and some of the salient results will be given below:
1. Of all the miniature films taken, 77.7 percent were read to be normal, 18 percent to be rechecked by large films because of come suspected clinical signs, and 4.3 percent to be retaken because of poor quality picture.
The proportion of the cases being required to be rechecked by large films was considerably larger compared with 1.5 percent obtained in General Mass survey carried out by Ministry of Health in 1955. In view of the fact that the people who were subject to this study had some clinical complaints, including those of the chest diseases, this signigicant difference in proportion was the one that could easily be expected.
2. Of all male cases, 13.4 percent were read to have been afflicted with active tuberculosis, while such cases rated 8.7 percent among female, averaging 11.5 percent by cases of both sexes.
3. As for the age distribution of proportion of those being detected as tubrculouse, it was observed that the proportions were rather greater among the ages of 25 or older in male, while no particular trend by age could be observed among the females.
It should be also noted that the proportion of cases with tuberculosis were substantially greater in male (13.4 percent) than in female (8.7 percent.).
4. 14.8 percent of those from Department of Internal Medicine were found to have tuverculosis. and 8 per cent of those from the other departments were found to be so.
5. Findings with simple calcification were most frequently observed among those in the older age group.
6. The cases subject to retaking because of the poor quality of pictures were observed most frequently among the children, possibly due to some difficulty in fixing the positions while the X-ray were taken.
